Collecting swatch watches

Learn why many people enjoy Swatch watch collecting, about the company’s history and all about the stunning styles.

It all started at the end of the 70’s when the watch business was on a downward spiral. Swatch decided that innovation was just as important as being functional, so they created the world’s thinnest plastic watch with only 51 components as opposed to the regular 91 parts. In doing this Swatch also kept the price affordable, thus attracting collectors worldwide. Along with the basic plastic, Swatch watch collectors can enjoy: Irony, the watch made of metal; Swatch Snowpass, great to use while skiing or snowboarding; Swatch SKIN Chrono, the thinnest chronograph in the entire world; Swatch Touch, interactive; Swatch Beat, featuring Internet time; and Fun Scuba, which has an automatic depth meter. With all of these collections it’s no wonder that a variety of people like to collect numerous Swatch Watches.

A run through of the collections:

Originals: These watches are great for first time Swatch watch collectors. The watches come in a variety of colors and shapes. Some of the most highly recognizable Swatch Originals include X-Large, The Swatch Olympic Collection, Lady and Gent to name a few.

Irony: Not your average Swatch watch. These metal watches might not make you think Swatch at first. They are sporty and fashionable with names like Big, Medium and Lady. Lady has the complete essence of Swatch watches. These watches can travel 200 meters under water for the Scuba lover in all of us.

SKIN: For those who love fabrics and fashion, these stylish watches are for you. Being the world’s thinnest chrono, it feels like you’re wearing nothing at all, hence the term Skin.

Bijoux: Swatch’s jewelry watches - for the diamond lover in all of us. These watches bring jewels and creativity in every single bijou Swatch watch. Women who love a little wrist bling will go crazy for these watches.

Flik Flak: Swatch watches for kids! The Swatch Company worked with physiologists to make the watches easy for kids to learn how to tell time. Why not get the kids into collecting? They will love it and will look forward to new styles every season.

Why collect: Why not collect these savvy watches? There are so many reasons to begin collecting Swatch watches. The prices couldn’t be more affordable; they’re thin, comfortable and extremely fashion forward.

Just as fashion designers come out with new designs season after season, so does Swatch watches. Swatch is a classic in itself. It’s great to know there is a watch company that is changing the way people tell time, while bringing fun and excitement to your wrist.

Swatch is revolutionary and a refreshing watch company, always bringing their collectors something new to add to their watch wardrobes. People who love accessories will love collecting these watches; just like stamp lovers can’t get enough of stamp collecting. The joy of collecting Swatch watches is simple because a company that lives on the motto “Always different, yet always the same” will always attract innovative and unique people to collect them.

Installation of quick pins on watch straps

I am writing this giude to help people save money and install their own quick pins . It is so simple that almost anyone can do it.

Before you begin, make sure that the strap is plyable and be cut on the backside where the pins are to be installed (common sense). Some straps, like stingray. are made of bone and cannot be cut. Next, measure the lug end of the strap that holds the springbar. Whatever that measures in width, is the size you need to order, ie....16 mm, 20 mm, 22 mm etc. Once you've recieved your pins, hold them up to the backside of the strap to make sure that once installed and extended, they will fit. Finally, take a sharp razor knife, being very carefull with very little pressure, a cut a straight line 3 mm long, halfway thru the strap (into the pinbar tunnel), starting 1 to 2 mm from the right end of the strap towards the middle of the strap (away from the end). I mark mine first with a pen, like doctors do in surgery. If you have done your job, you will able to open the leather and slip the quik pin in. Most of this is common sense but at least this might help as a guide. If this has helped a little, I will be very proud.

HOW TO SPOT A FAKE CHANEL

BONJOUR CHANEL FANS! Chanel the international luxury goods company, founded in France by Gabrielle "Coco' Chanel in 1911 continues today as one of the world's preeminent fashion houses. "Coco" Chanel was the couturiere extraodinaire for the modern woman of the 20th century. The 1st quilted Chanel bag designed by Gabrielle herself, was created by hand in 1955 of quilted leather or jersey. She designed and wore all of her own jewelry which was made mostly of "faux" stones. She adored jewlelry and wore scads of it all at once , adorning her neck and wrists. She was partial to several strands of faux pearls and was almost never seen without a cuff bracelet on each wrist. She commisioned the Gripoix family run business of jewelry designers to produce her designs and to this day they are still commisioned by the House of Chanel. Presnet day designer Karl Lagerfeld has kept Chanel at the top of the international fashion houses. Chanel is still located today at 27, 29 and 31 Rue Cambon in Paris where the ready to wear boutiques are located with Haute Couture on the 1st floor of 31 rue Cmabon. Gabrielle Chanel's apartment which is located above 31 rue Cambon is carefully preserved as a shrine to her.

Chanel herself always said," THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE AND THE 2ND BEST ARE EXPENSIVE ! "

Chanel Maison De Couture strictly controls all design, manufacturing, distribution and advertising to ensure the highest level of quality of its products. The House of Chanel is owned by the Wertheimer family and is the only couture house to remain in private hands. The Chanel line includes clothing, fragrance, cosmetics, leather goods, watches, accessories, costume jewelry and fine jewelry. May I say, they are all FABULOUS !

These products are sold through a network of CHANEL Boutiques and very select high end retailers. They do not allow their items to be sold on websites, discount stores, wholesalers and you cannot purchase Chanel items on the Chanel.com website. Do you really think any high end designer makes quality merchandise for sale in their boutiques at top $$$$ and also sells to websites at a fraction of the prices, NO WAY, they don't need too and would ever do so. Any website that claims they buy overstock, discontinued or 2nd/damaged, is misleading the buyers, !

CHANEL stricly prohibits anyone infringing on the integrity of their famous trademark and FULLY prosecutes anyone who does so! They have a legal department dedicated to removing counterfeit items listed on ebay and other websites to protect innocent buyers who think they are getting that deal of a lifetime. If the bag is selling for cheap, or way below retail, it is most likely a fake, even a used CHANEL will hold its value and will sell for close to retail as when new.

CHANEL uses high quality calfskin on their bags NOT LAMBSKIN. They do use many other leathers and fabrics but the Cambon line is entirely made of calfskin. Cambon bags are made in Italy, not France although CHANEL DOES manufacture items in France. The new "COCO CABAS" line was also made in Italy, not France and I have verified this over and over with CHANEL. They do not sell 2nds to outside sources and any bag that is not PERFECT is shredded and destroyed to prevent anyone including employees of CHANEL to resell them. They also do not allow websites to offer their bags for sale, such as sacbelle.com or fetucci.com . I have looked at the bags on these websites and even called their customer support, they claim they scour the world looking for overstock on these bags and santch them up and offer them for 1/4th the cost, simply not true. When did you ever hear that Chanel was "Overstocked" on bags. There are alot of them out there, claiming they buy in bulk and can sell these bags for way below retail, simply not true. CHANEL controls where their products are sold and sets the retail price. You can buy in bulk, almost MIRROR image high end designer bags from Asia for very little money and then re-sell them for thousands, I have the catalogues and sellers names who are doing this. pictures can be deceiving or even stolen, you do not always get what you see. They claim they are real, when they are not. Ebay works very hard at trying to keep all counterfeits off and removes listings daily, but some will slip thru the system. Not all sellers are out to make a quick buck, there are many reputable sellers on ebay, you just need to do research before making that important purchase. The Cambon line was also sold out and discontinued in the fall of 2006.

Right now, the most commonly used counterfeit serial numbers on CHANEL bags are :7244764, 8947749, 9316391, 9395451, 9395455, 9675223, 9777617, 10218184, 10380486, 10501946, 10995820, 11062948 and 10803549. Even counterfeits come with a serial number card and matching # inside the bag. The card should be black and gold, not laminated in plastic and the hologram inside the bag will pull apart if removed, thus ruining the tag. Please avoid purchasing a bag with one of these serial #'s. They are counterfeits. The tags, and authenticity cards provided with each bag is made to the same specifications today as they were 25 years ago, they are not changed yearly as some sellers will tell you. They do not make several different styles of authenticity cards. BLACK with GOLD trim and lettering.

Know the bag you are trying to purchase, is it smooth calfskin or the CHANEL caviar leather (pebble grain in the leather). Know what lining it should have and so on. The more you know, the less chance you will have of getting ripped off.

Check the sellers feedback and return policy. Sellers should be willing to discuss the authenticity of the bag and its origin of where they obtained the bag. Be aware of sellers who claim to have bought several from any website selling high end designer items at a much lower cost. I do not know any fashion house that wholesales or sells 2nds to outside sources. CHANELS only come from their own boutiques and selected high end stores, such as Neiman, Saks, Bergdorfs and so on.

CHANEL and other high end designers DO NOT authenticate items for buyers in writing, they will offer a verbal to you but beware of those sellers offering refunds if you have a letter from a boutique manager stating the bag is not authentic, CHANEL NEVER offers written proof.

Chanel shopping bags are black with the word C H A N E L written across the front, nothing more, same for the dust bags and boxes that come with your bag. Wallets and small leather goods do not come with dust bags, they are wrapped in black felt and placed in a Chanel box.

The inside hologram sticker will match the authenicity card, it will also come apart if you try to remove the serial # sticker. They started using this type of sticker in the later 1980's, before that the sticker was plain and placed in the bottom of the bag.

The hang tag is made of white paper with the style #, style name, bag color, bar code and the price listed on it.

CHANEL did not make the little metal dog tag or small coin puse attached to many of the fakes seen on ebay. The COCO CABA bag DOES come with a matching make-up pouch. It is attached to the leather strap inside the bag.

Use a credit card to make your purchase, it is much easier to get a refund when choosing this payment method. Once you file a fraud claim with them, they will issue a credit and investigate which usually works out for the scammed buyer. Paypal is very cooperative with the credit card companies when fraud is involved but not always helpful when you have a dispute for "not as described" . It is a federal crime to sell counterfeits and also illegal to mail them thru the USPS. I know of sellers who have been arrested and prosecuted for this by the FBI. They are now sitting in Federal prison for 8 yrs. and hundreds of thousand of dollars of restitution to the buyers. They also had all their assets seized by the government. This type of crime is not taken lightly by law enforcement. You will also be prosecuted for buying counterfeits for the purpose re-selling them. Ignorance is no excuse.

History of Watches

Timekeeping has a long history, dating back to ancient times. We've come a long way from the sundial, into an age where watch designs are evolving each day.

From the design of the pocket watch (invented in the 1500's), Patek Phillippe & Co. began crafting what would become the very first wristwatch in the late 1800s. Initially, women wore wristwatches more than men. Watches also became popular gifts to celebrate a child's entrance to adulthood and were often passed through generations as treasured family heirlooms.

In 1914, as soldiers were getting ready for World War I, they were issued wristwatches. These watches proved to be more mobile and less expensive than pocket watches. They were also an important part of strategy. American soldiers used their watches to synchronize the timing of their attacks and battles. Once the war was over, soldiers continued to wear wristwatches and society quickly followed.

Over the years, timepiece technology has evolved from the simple (alarms and chronographs) to the once unimaginable (television, radio and cell phone watches). Today, you can choose from a number of unique designs to fit your lifestyle perfectly.

$10 Watch vs. $10,000 Watch

$10 vs $10,000 What's the difference?

It comes down to rarity and complication of the movement (movt). A more complicated, higher jeweled movt the more accurate the watch. A jeweled movt does not mean bling, bling, but the jewel the sprocket turns on. Automatic and manual wind movt's use more sprockets hence higher jewel count than quartz but quartz will tend to be more accurate. Have I lost you yet. Quartz is more accurate because it does not use a spring to propel the gears but an electrical impulse. That is why on auto wind watches you have a smother sweep sec hand vs the tick tick of the quartz. Quartz movt's very greatly in price too from a dollar to hundreds of dollars. Tag Heuer 'quartz' chronograph movt is one of the best quartz movt I have seen. The original formula 1 (1990's) had a 7 hand chronograph. 10th sec, sec, hour, and min chrono function, while maintaining normal min, sec, and hour. There is also a flyback chronograph. This is a chrono function that when the second hand is stopped (typically with the bottom pusher) it continue remember the elapse time and the same button is pushed again it resumes to the running position as if it were not stopped at all. This function can also be achieved with an auto wind watch as well and is referred to as rattrapante. This is a very complicated function and can cost thousands of dollars. You have to ask your self what do you want out of your watch, value, prestige, acuraracy, looks, function, durability? I personally love automatic wind chronographs, and wear a Titanium Omega Seamaster. I use to wear a stainless quartz citizen eco-drive skyhawk chronograph, and it was a great watch, but I compair it like a fast and furious Honda civic vs a Porsche. The Honda may be just as fast, cost less money and be more reliable, but it just doesn't have the feel or soul the porsche does.

I probably have told you way more than you wanted, but actually haven't even scratched the surface.

In regards to some high quality watches that won't break the bank are: Zodiac, Sector, and Hamilton.

One more thing about Swiss watches. By Swiss law a watch that says Swiss or Swiss made must have the Movement and the case made in Switzerland. Further if it says Geneva it must be made in Geneva Switzerland. If the movement is Swiss but the case is made elsewhere, the dial can read Swiss Movement or Movt.

Selecting the correct Mainspring for your watch

There are two ways to select the correct mainspring for your watch movement.

What you need is the "Catalogue of sizes of referred watch mainsprings" by Uniressor, for both ways of search. The mainsprings come in a package of 6.

· In the book mentioned above (each watchmaker has one) you can look up the caliber of your watch. For example; you are looking for a mainspring for Omega caliber 30 SR. In the yellow part of the book you search for Omega and then on 30 SR. Here you see that you need a mainspring with number 150-26. The number 150-26 can be looked up in the list of references and standard sizes, so you know what sizes and references the mainspring should have. For example; 150-26 has the sizes 1.50 x 11 / 11.5 -0.14. (spec.: Hight 1.50 mm, 11/11.5 mm barrel width -diameter, 0,14 mm thickness)
· The green part of the book tells us what mainsprings can be used of different calibers by different watches. The 150-26 for example is also used in some Ebel, Lanco, Roamer, Tissot and Valjoux movements.

remark: The table of references and standard sizes (the white pages of the catalogue) ; the heights close to certain marks have been grouped to facilitate interchangability (1.20 with 1.15, 1.35 with 1.30 or 1.15 with 1.20 and 1.25 with 1.30. The diameter is rounded of to the nearest 0.5 mm.

We can help you on your search, please email us with the brand name of the watch and the caliber of the movement.

What’s the difference between Automatic and a Quartz?

Although many of us aspire to collecting fine Swiss watches, many of my customers are unsure of the differences between an Automatic and a Quartz watch movement.

Some people may think that this is an embarrassing question to ask, but I can remember a time when I presumed that a smooth, sweeping movement was only reserved for one of those impressive clocks I saw as a child at railway stations. When I found out that you can get a sweep movement in a watch, I had to have one right away!

So, basically speaking, an Automatic movement is one which has a smooth sweeping action, easily demonstrated by a seconds hand as it travels at a continuous cyclic rate around the watch dial. A Quartz movement is the common watch movement, with the repeating starting and stopping action.

Why do collectors prefer Automatic movements? Simply because an Automatic movement represents a higher standard of mechanical engineering than a Quartz movement.

At the heart of an Automatic movement is the the rotor which pivots forwards and backwards at high speed - this uses energy stored in the mainspring, wound by either manually winding the crown of the watch, or the motion of the automatic winding mechanism by the kinetic movement of your wrist. The power is translated via a series of wheels, cams, and pinions.

Differently, a Quartz movement uses a battery, circuit board, and far simpler mechanisms. Take a look at a picture of an Automatic movement versus a Quartz and you’ll appreciate the differences.

For a good investment in a luxury watch, a quality mechanical Automatic movement is always considered to be more valuable than a Quartz movement.

Thanks for reading, I would love to hear your comments.

How is Swiss Made ?

Switzerland is considered the home of high end watches. Indeed many of the world's finest watches are made in Swizerland & Switzerland is home to some of the most famous and highly regarded watch brands.

To qualify as "Swiss Made" under Swiss law (OSM, enacted 28 August 1992), a watch must contain 50% by value Swiss made components, the movement must be fitted into the case in Switzerland and final inspection must be completed in Switzerland. In an interesting example of the impact of globalisation in the manufacturing industry, many Swiss watches are partly made in China. This in no way detracts from the quality or value of the finished watch and in fact it is a tribute to the very high standards of Chinese craftsmanship and precision manufacturing.

Many mid-range mechanical & quartz watch movements, these are called "ebauche" or "blank" movements because they have not had their final inspection yet (for ease of reference I call these "movements") and most watch cases in the world today are made in Shenzhen in China, just across the border from Hong Kong. To qualify as "Swiss Made" these watch movements must contain at least 50% by value Swiss made components. The movements and their cases are shipped from China to Switzerland where the movements are fitted into their cases and the finished watches are given their final inspection in Switzerland.

The leading manufacturer of Swiss ebauche movements is ETA, a company specislised in make watch movements. ETA apparently supplies some 85% of Swiss watch ebauche movements and apparently much of its production of is sourced in China.

Cynics may think "Oh well it's easy to have 50% by value of Swiss components, one Swiss made cog probably costs the same as the rest of a movement made in China." Well, ha ha, the cynic would be wrong. Switzerland is home to precision engineering and the manufacture of synthetic gems, you know, the "jewels" or rubies that go in a watch, well they mostly come from Switzerland, as do all those tiny beautifully engineered cogs and springs and levers. In fact many watches which do not carry the magical words "Swiss Made" contain many Swiss made components, right now I am wearing on my wrist a very fine mechanical chronograph, designed and assembled in China, I know the manufacturer and he tells me that most of its components are in fact Swiss made.

There is an interesting twist to this tale. In the 19th Century, probably the best watches were British, these were often hand crafted one off or very limited run pieces. The Swiss had an old established high end and low end watch industry, they imitated English designs and exported these worldwide. Then the Americans developed technology to manufacture by mass production very high quality precision engineered watch components, three US companies are still household names for this, Waltham, Hamilton & Elgin, and in the space of 10 years, Swiss exports of watches to the US dropped by 75%. But US technology was exported to Switzerland and for a while Switzerland and the US competed as makers of fine watches but over time Switzerland replaced the USA.

Then quartz digital and analogue watches were introduced, ironically by Hamilton of the US and CEH of Switzerland and this destroyed the US mechanical watch industry and almost killed the traditional Swiss mechanical watch industry too. But starting in the 1980s in a piece of inspired two pronged marketing, Swiss mechanical watches were sold as "exclusive" high end luxury items and with Swatch, the Swiss fought back at the market's low end.

The collapse of Swiss watch making in the 1970s led to consolidation of the industry in the hands of a few holding companies and a few independent firms. Readers may be interested to know that the Swatch group own ETA and many of the best known and highly regarded brands.

Fortuitously in 1978 China opened its doors to foreign investment offering a large pool of very cheap labour, at the same time as the old mechanical watch industry was on its knees in Europe, North America and Japan. I heard one of the Swiss watch companies led the way to watch manufacturing in China, I think it may have been Tissot. Now, just 28 years later, largely as a result of massive foreign investment, China has moved from 12th to 4th largest economy in the world in absolute terms of Gross Domestic Product ("GDP") and 2nd in terms of GDP measured by purchasing power parity ("PPP"). Now China's labour is no longer as cheap as it once was but its labour is now highly skilled and its infrastructure is amazing.

Do you remember how people used to sneer at "Made in Japan" as meaning poor quality ? Well, now people aspire to buy Japanese, think of Sony, think of Nikon, think of Lexus and speaking of watches, think of Seiko.

Soon the same will be true of "Made in China" - when that happens, remember, you read it here first !

Having said all of the above, the making of watches is now a synergous relationship in which the movement may be assembled in China but many of its parts come from Switzerland and do not underestimate the value added to a good quality watch by the final adjustment and inspection which takes place in Switzerland. Just as a good piano or a fine car needs to be carefully tuned before it sounds right, so a good watch needs to be carefully regulated, adjusted and inspected before it keeps good time, and that takes experience and skill, arts at which the Swiss watch industry excels.

There's a moral to this tale. The moral for me is that international trade and investment can bring people and businesses in distant lands closer to each other and bring harmony, economic growth, prosperity and peace to all.

With good wishes to all who read this !

Are there fakes to watch out for with vintage watches?

Yes. Fakes of some sorts have been around for a while. The concept of a watch being totally faked from scratch is fairly modern--mostly in the past 20 years. But fake older watches exist and usually fall in one of the following categories:

A generic make watch doctored up with fake Big Name Brand markings. Most commonly, someone merely repainted the dial with a Big Name Brand logo. Though occasionally Big Name Brand markings were etched or stickered on the movement or inside, too. Usually there is no attempt to match a specific model of Big Name Brand--just to make something else look like it is part of the Big Name Brand brand.

A generic make watch doctored up with some genuine Big Name Brand or look-alike parts added to it. Usually still not trying to exactly replicate a specific Big Name Brand model, but looking like it is part of the Big Name Brand brand.

A *genuine* Big Name Brand watch doctored up with genuine Big Name Brand or lookalike parts to falsely resemble a rarer or more valuable Big Name Brand model. A prime example of this are fairly common 1960s OMEGA Seamaster 120 watches that someone replaces/repaints the dial and adds a diver's bezel to make them closely resemble the rare and much more valuable Seamaster 300 of the same time period.

A *genuine* Big Name Brand watch that the movement failed and was replaced with a generic movement--because the replacement was not available, was too expensive or to cheat the customer. Sometimes a watchmaker would etch the Big Name Brand logo on the replacement movement or salvage the part of the original movement that had the logo or serial number on it and fit it on the replacement movement.

Modern made fakes from scratch to resemble older collectible models.
and finally--this you see mostly with ROLEX--fake 18K gold cases and bracelets with genuine ROLEX movements salvaged out of older stainless steel models.

How To Choose A Watch Wholesaler

Choosing a watch wholesaler is not quite as easy as it may sound. Sure, you could just find a company that offers this service and get started. But do you really want to take the chance of getting mixed up with the wrong people? This may work out fine for you, but at the same time it could go the other way as well. Choosing a watch wholesaler should take you a good bit of time. The people who are in a hurry to get started are the ones that always seem to get duped out of money in the end.

The first step to choosing a watch wholesaler is comparing your available options. Instead of signing up with the first company that you come across, you will instead want to get a few of them lined up. From there you can then compare each ones pros and cons. After you are done doing this you can then move on. When you are comparing companies be sure to write down your findings. This way when everything is said and done you can make a determination on what you should do next.

When you think that you know which watch wholesaler to use, the next step is calling them on the phone and asking the tough questions. Any information that you need in order to make a solid decision is free game. Never be afraid to ask the difficult questions. This is the only way that you will get what you want in the end. If a watch wholesaler will not give you answers to your questions simply move on. When questions are avoided it should be a red flag in your mind. Remember, there are plenty of reliable options available. You should never be pressured into doing something that you are not 100 percent comfortable with.

Finally, you can make a decision when all of the details have been looked over, and you are sure about what you are doing. For some people this may take a few days, for others it may take a few months. Don't feel like you have to be in a hurry to find a watch wholesaler. Taking your time is the key to ending up with a company that you are comfortable working with.

Nobody ever said that choosing a watch wholesaler would be easy; to some people it is downright hard. But in order to get the best start in this industry you will need to take your time during this process. If you do not you may end up getting off on the wrong foot. And if this happens your business could be doomed from the start. Like the saying goes, anything worth doing is worth doing right!

How often should I wind my watch?

This is a pretty common question.

If you have a "wind up" mechanical pocket or wrist watch, most should be wound daily. Even though many modern watch movements can run over 40 hours, and the famed antique "Sixty Hour Bunn" and "Sixty Hour Bunn Special" have longer main springs, they are still meant to be wound daily. A full wind can be achieved when you turn the crown until you cannot turn it with your fingers. CAUTION: Some modern watches have very delicate stems that can break if you try to wind it past its fill wind. However, it is very easy to tell when winding if it is fully wound.

If you have an "automatic" or "self winding" mechanical watch, you normally do not need to wind it at all. An automatic watch has a rotor that actually winds the watch when the watch is being worn. However, if you are not wearing the watch daily, or have a very stationary lifestyle, some folks find use of a "watch winder" to keep the watch from stopping. Also, you CAN wind most automatic watches by turning the crown as you would a wind up. The difference is that with most automatic watches you can turn the crown all you want and you cannot feel when it is wound up.

Of course, if it is a modern quartz watch, they are not wound at all. They are powered from a battery last lasts a few years. If the watch has stopped, many mall jewelers, and even department stores and pawn shops will replace your battery for $10 to $20 depending on your location and the store you are going to.

Discount Gucci Watch

If you are looking for a discount Gucci watch you might have an easier time finding one than you had originally thought. There is no doubt that Gucci watches are beautiful, but they are also quite expensive so a lot of consumers just cannot go out and buy them. Because they are so expensive, some people simply settle for something else, others buy great replicas of the Gucci watches, and other still wait until they find the perfect discount Gucci watch that is not only beautiful, but more easily fits into their budget. A discount Gucci watch can come quite easily if you are willing to shop around for a while and find the watch that is just right for you at a price that is just right for your budget.
Some people don’t have the option to spend several hundred to several thousand dollars on a watch, and that is understandable. Instead of settling for another watch that you think is just okay, you can always shop around for the perfect Gucci watch. This may mean that you cannot just run out and buy the perfect watch, but eventually you’ll get the watch that you’ve had your eye on. Because a Gucci watch never goes out of style, you don’t have to worry about waiting for the discount Gucci watch you have your eye on to be available. No matter when you purchase that discounted watch, it will still look fabulous and you will be able to wear it for a long, long time without risking a fashion faux pas.
One of the best places you can find a Gucci watch is at your local Gucci dealer. This may be surprising, but it happens a lot more than you might think. Take the time to visit the Gucci dealer in your area every once and again and inquire about when they will be getting new styles in. You do not have to tell the dealer why you are asking, just seem generally interested. What this information will do for you is let you know when you may be able to pick up that discount Gucci watch that you’ve been looking at. When the Gucci dealer gets new watches in, they usually rotate their stock and they want to get rid of the older items first. To get rid of the older items fast, they usually discount them. You can save up to 30% off of the original price, making your discount Gucci watch a real deal!
If you don’t have a Gucci dealer in your area that regularly offers discounts, the next best place to shop is the Internet. While you might be taking a chance on the quality and legitimacy of the watch, asking to see a picture and copy of certificate of authenticity you can lessen your chances of being scammed. The reason you should shop online is that you will find a lot of legitimate retailers that are honestly trying to decrease their stock a bit and will offer generous discounts to do so. Even after you pay shipping you can generally find a great deal on a discount Gucci watch. Not only can you take as long as you want to browse around and consider all of your options, you can get the watch you have had your eye on.
If you are into online auctions you may also find that you can get a great discount Gucci watch for far less than you’ll be able to find it from a retailer. Again, just take caution when dealing with an item that you cannot actually see before you buy it.

How To Find Good Cheap Rolex Replica Watches

Brand watches like Rolex, Cartier or Omega are worldwide renowned for their outstanding qualities, as well as for their very impressive price tag. Over the years, these brand names have become a symbol of the luxury watch industry. At the same time, another industry was developing at a fast pace, that of the brand imitations like Rolex replica watches. Starting as a black market of poor sloppy imitations, the watch replica industry has grown so much that it is now tolerated or even embraced by some brand manufacturers.

Nowadays, cheap Rolex replicas are only cheap in relation to the original product. There are the most successful imitations that mimic the real thing to perfection. They are handmade by experienced professionals and can be plated with real gold and diamonds.

When you decide to chose from the vast array of cheap Rolex replicas, you could be in for a double deal. They are so much more affordable than the original ones and even if you have the money, you could very well save it and spend it on a vacation or a new car, or even buy yourself more timepiece models and makers. On the other hand, the quality level of today’s cheap Rolex replicas is outstanding. The imitation is done at such a level that for example, the solid engravings or the qualities of the magnifying date glass are copied to perfection.

It may be hard to believe that such a high quality can be found on cheap Rolex replicas but now you can use the expression of a genuine high-quality Rolex replica. The best place to start looking for an imitation of your favorite makers and models are the online stores. The wide selection of cheap Rolex replica watches is simply surprising. Once you have found what you are looking for, take the time to verify some of the details. Before you go ahead and make the purchase you can document on the specific model. Compare it to the genuine product and check manufacture details like the quality grade that will help you get an idea about it. Even if we are talking about cheap Rolex replicas, there still has to be a balance between the quality level and the price claimed by the retailer.

Also, take a minute to check out the credentials of the seller. This will keep you away from any scammer traps. If the online company offers you a good deal for your money and they have been in the business for a while, with a continuous product flow and few official complaints, then you are in for the bargain of your life. In a store that sells cheap Rolex replica watches, you will be able to buy a special timepiece that is also a piece of stylish jewelry and a classy accessory, all under a famous brand name.

What does it mean if I was told I "over wound" my watch?

You really can't "over wind" a watch, at least not without taking out a pair of pliers and really cranking on the winding crown well past the point of it being hard to turn. If you have been told that your watch is "over wound", it means one of two things:
The person who told you that the watch is over wound doesn't know what they are talking and isn't honest enough to admit it.
The person who told you that the watch is over wound either doesn't want to try and fix it, or can't fix it and isn't honest enough to admit it. They are also willing to make it sound like it is your fault by saying that "you over wound it."
Either way, you can take it as a sign that you should never try to have a watch repaired by them and that you should always go somewhere else.
Watchmakers who blame problems on a watch being over wound are like car mechanics who blame problems on gas tanks being over filled. Most people would laugh if they were told their car's flat tire was caused by over filling their gas tank, but they accept a broken roller jewel as being caused by over winding. There are many reasons why a watch won't run, just like there are many reasons why a car won't run. Neither a car with an empty gas tank nor a watch that is wound down will run. If cars didn't have fuel gauges, I suppose that most people would at least try filling the gas tank first, just like most people try winding the watch first. Being the last person to fill the gas tank doesn't mean you broke the car, nor does being the last person to wind the watch.

TAG Heuer Announces New Professional Golf Watch

TAG Heuer, along with golf genius Tiger Woods, announced a new professional golf watch yesterday. I'm not a golfer myself, but apparently the conventional wisdom has always been that you remove your watch when playing a serious match because it can interfere with your swing in several different ways. TAG Heuer and Tiger Woods set out to change all that by creating a professional golf watch that works with golfers rather than against them.

Lightweight titanium construction. When a watch has to be lightweight and strong, titanium is the only way to go. Apparently the TAG Heuer professional golf watch is 60% lighter than TAG's other steel watches.
Integrated clasp design. The clasp is actually integrated into the case of the watch to keep it out of the way. To release the strap, press the two safety release buttons at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions.
Inverted crown position. The crown of the TAG Heuer golf watch is at the 9 o'clock position rather than the traditional 3 o'clock position to keep it from digging into the golfer's wrist or snagging on his glove. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing non-sports watches designed that way.
Silicon, slide-proof strap. It's lightweight and very flexible, shock absorbent, and can expand and contract with the golfer's wrist as necessary.
Shock resistant. Over time, many watches can be damaged by the repetitive shock of a good, solid golf swing, but not the TAG Heuer professional golf watch. Apparently, the watch can absorb 45 times the shock generated by a typical golf swing.
Quartz movement. Automatic watches can be damaged by the rotor revolving too violently during movements like tennis or golf swings, so TAG Heuer wisely went with quartz for the professional golf watch.
Tiger Wood's logo on the dial and signature on the caseback. I don't know how much that will actually help your game, but it's a nice touch.
Luminous hands and hour markers.

Rolex of H.R.H. Prince Bernhard for auction

Prince Bernhard (1911-2004), member of the Dutch Royal Family, was an avid Rolex wearer. Dutch magazine Quote published an article in their March edition about the auction of this particular Rolex Date. Christie’s in Amsterdam will auction this Rolex Date on the 3rd of April 2007. Maarten van Gijn, Public Relations & Marketing of Christie’s, mailed me the picture below and stated that I could use it for this blog. I am curious why the Royal Family is auctioning this watch, in my opinion it should be on one of the wrists of his grand childeren. Anyway, according to Quote Magazine, it will fetch around 3000 Euro.

How to Keep Silver Jewelry Clean

Want to keep your silver jewelry clean longer between polishing?
Steps
1. Place your silver jewelry in a "Tupperware" like container with a lid that seals shut.
2. Place a wadded piece of aluminum foil in the bowl with the jewelry and place the lid on the bowl. Keep your jewelry in the bowl when you're not wearing it.
3. Replace the foil every week or two.
Tip
You can also just shower with them, if you never take them off and wash your hands or go about your daily activities, they clean themselves!

How to Tell if a Diamond is Real

Whether you're buying that perfect gift for a special person in your life or you want to know if your own diamond is the real thing, the proliferation of imitation stones and the people who try to pass them off as real can be worrisome. While the best option is to have the diamond appraised by a jeweler you trust, who can test the diamond without damaging it, this will cost you, and it may not be convenient if you're shopping around. Here's how to take matters into your own hands and catch a fraud on the spot.

Steps
1. Ask for a certificate. Make sure it's from an impartial diamond grading authority (e.g. Gemological Institute of America, Jewellers Association of Australia) or an independent appraiser who is affiliated with a professional organization (like the American Society of Appraisers). This is especially important if you're buying a stone you haven't seen, such as from the Internet.
2. Look through it. Diamonds have a high "refractive index" (meaning they sharply bend the light that passes through them). Glass and quartz have a lower refractive index, meaning they sparkle less because they bend light less, even when they've been cut nicely (because the refractive index is an inherent physical propert which is not altered in any way by a nice cut - unless, technically speaking, the cut induced a permanent strain on the crystalline lattice).
o If the diamond is not mounted, turn it upside down and place it on a piece of newspaper. If you can read the print through the stone or even see distorted black smudges, then it probably isn't a diamond. **Unless the cut is disproportionate, in that case print can be seen through a real diamond.**
o If the stone shows any sign of double refraction, it may be Moissanite (silicon carbide), a gemstone that is so similar to a diamond that even jewelers can have a hard time telling them apart. **look at the facet junctions fron the top side of the stone, the 'star' facets' if you see what looks like double vision then that is the doubling effect.
o If the diamond is mounted, you should not be able to see the bottom of a diamond looking directly from the top.
o Draw a small dot with a pen on a piece of white paper. Place your unmounted diamond over the center of the dot. Look directly down on it and if your stone is not a diamond, you will see a circular reflection in the stone.
3. Observe the reflections. A real diamond's reflections usually manifest in various shades of gray. If you see rainbow reflections, you're either dealing with a low-quality diamond or a fake.
4. Take the bottom view: Under a microscope hold the stone table(top facet) down. If you see an orange flash only to the facets as you rock the stone it is fake.
5. Buy a Diamond Tester. These are readily available and can quickly indicate if is a true diamond or simulant.
6. Weigh the stone. Cubic zirconia weighs approximately 55% more than diamonds for the same shape and size. Use a carat or gram scale to compare the stone in question to a real diamond.
7. Check the setting and mount. A real diamond is not likely to be set in a cheap metal. Stamps inside the setting indicating real gold or platinum (10K, 14K, 18K, 585, 750, 900, 950, PT, Plat) are a good sign, while a "C.Z." stamp will give away that the center stone is not a real diamond.
8. Put the stone under a UV light. Many (but not all) diamonds will exhibit blue fluorescence under an ultra violet or black light, so the presence of a medium to strong blue confirms that it is real. The absence of blue, however, does not mean it is fake; it could simply be a better quality diamond. If you see a very slight green, yellow, or gray fluorescence under ultraviolet light, it may be Moissanite.
9. Test it with a heat probe. Real stones disperse heat quickly and they won't heat up with the probe. This takes about 30 seconds and is often done free of charge. It also doesn't hurt the stone the way some other ways of testing will.
10. Have the diamond x-rayed. Real diamonds do not show up on an x-ray, glass, cubic zirconium and crystals all have slightly radiopaque quailities, diamonds are radiolucent.
11. Use a jeweler's loupe to inspect the diamond. Mined diamonds usually have small imperfections or inclusions that can be seen this way. A CZ does not have these imperfections. For that matter, lab-grown diamonds (which should pass all of the other tests) usually don't have imperfections either.
12. Put the diamond in some water. If it is real it will sink, and if it is fake it will float.
13. Put the stone in your mouth and breathe on it. If the stone stays "foggy" for 2-4 seconds, then it is not real. Real diamonds will have cleared by the time you look at them. Be warned though - some jewellers cap cubic zirconum bases with real diamond which will of course clear.
Tips
· If you take the stone for an independent appraisal, expect to pay between $35 and $75 in the US, and make sure the stone never leaves your sight.
· Diamonds do scratch glass, but so do many imitation stones.
· Not a lot of fake diamonds can scratch sandpaper.

Warnings
· Some diamonds are lab-created or synthetic, but they are still "real". They cost a fraction of what a mined diamond costs, but they are (for the most part) chemically the same as "natural" diamonds. Telling the difference between a natural and a synthetic diamond is beyond the scope of this article and is best determined by a professional.
· There is no way to be 100% sure that a diamond is real unless there is a certificate. If you buy a pawned item, something off a table at a market, or an item off of a website, you are taking a risk.

Invar or Elinvar Pocket Watch Movements

The 20th century began with a major breakthrough: The Frenchman Charles Edouard Guillaume invented a material called “Invar,” a nickel-steel alloy. (Guillaume was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1920.) Invar (derived from “invariable” due to its particular characteristics) was the ideal material for balances as its coefficient of expansion is 15 times lower than that of steel.

In addition to the name Invar, another name for the same material became known as Elinvar. The Elinvar name was used by the Hamilton Watch Company. The materials used by Hamilton may have been somewhat improved upon or Hamilton may have used slightly different materials. The end result was the same. Hairsprings were no longer affected by changes in temperature. However, there is a major difference between the two metals as follows:

From 1890 he focused his attention on alloys and developed invar and elinvar. Invar's low coefficient of expansion (change in volume caused by change in temperature) and elinvar's low coefficient of elasticity (change in elasticity caused by change in temperature), combined with their low cost, resulted in their widespread use in scientific instruments.

Charles-Edouard Guillaume was born at Fleurier, in the Swiss-Jura, on February 15, 1861. His grandfather had left France for political reasons during the Revolution and established a watchmaking business in London. The business was carried on by his three sons but Charles' father, Édouard, eventually returned to settle in Fleurier.

French physicist whose exhaustive studies of ferronickel alloys culminated in the discovery of invar (a nickel-steel alloy) and gained him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1920.

In 1883 Guillaume joined the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, Sevres, and from 1915 served as its director. His early studies there included exhaustive investigations of the mercury thermometer and of the volume of the litre, which he found to be 1,000.028 cubic centimetres, not 1,000.000 cubic centimetres as had been accepted.

Guillaume received his early education in Neuchâtel before going to the Zurich Polytechnic where he obtained his doctor's degree. He spent a short time as an officer in the artillery before entering the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, as an assistant, in 1883. He became Associate Director in 1902 and from 1915 until his retirement in 1936, he was Director of the Bureau. He remained as Honorary Director from 1936 until his death.

During his brief military career, Guillaume studied mechanics and ballistics but his earliest investigations at the bureau were with thermometry. He carried out important investigations on corrections to mercury-in-glass thermometers and he was responsible for the detailed calibration of thermometers used at the Bureau in the establishment of the thermal expansions of the standards of length. He was concerned in initial work on the International Metre and undertook a determination of the volume of one kilogram of water by the contact method.

A chance observation by Guillaume on the coefficient of expansion of nickel-iron alloys led to a systematic investigation of a whole series of alloys and the discovery of invar, an alloy with a very low coefficient of expansion; elinvar, for which the thermoelastic coefficient is practically zero, i.e. Young's modulus constant, over a considerable temperature range; together with other useful alloys. The applications of invar were quickly recognized and the material was used in rapid methods for the measurement of geodetic baselines. The alloy is widely used in instruments of precision, such as thermostats and pendulums of astronomic clocks. Guillaume's total compensating balance for high-grade watches and chronometers, which eliminates the secondary error, was perfected by an elinvar hair spring.

Guillaume's work is recorded in many papers published by the Bureau and he has written, amongst other works, Études thermométriques (Studies on Thermometry, 1886), Traité de thermométrie (Treatise on Thermometry, 1889), Unités et Étalons (Units and Standards, 1894), Les rayons X (X-Rays, 1896), Recherches sur le nickel et ses alliages (Investigations on Nickel and its Alloys, 1898] , La vie de la matière (The Life of Matter, 1899), La Convention du Mètre et le Bureau international des Poids et Mesures (Metrical Convention and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, 1902), Les applications des aciers au nickel (Applications of Nickel-Steels, 1904), Des états de la matière (States of Matter, 1907), Les récent progrès du système métrique (Recent progress in the Metric System, 1907, 1913). His book Initiation à la Mécanique (Introduction to Mechanics) has been translated into several languages. He was appointed Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from the Universities of Geneva, Neuchatel and Paris. He was a President of the Société Française de Physique and a member, honorary member or corresponding member of more than a dozen of the leading scientific academies of Europe.

How to Remove Water from Inside a Watch Face

How to remove water or condensation from inside the face of a watch.
Steps
Remove the back as if you were changing the battery.
There are several ways to remove the water:
Lay the watch face down, on a cloth, in the sun.
Lay it down in front of a fan or a register grate.
Use the "low heat" setting of a hair dryer on the watch.
Before replacing the back, check the rubber seal is in the right place. Replace if worn out or add a small quantity of Vaseline if in good condition. This should prevent future water problems.

How To Identify A Bogus or Fake Rolex Watch

Rolex watches are probably one of the most copied watches in the world. Many of the counterfeits use very good mechanical movements that lets the sweep second hand glide around the dial chapters, a Rolex trait. Others use a common quartz movement where the sweep second hand ticks every second as it steps around the dial, an obvious fake. But be careful, Rolex made a few models that used quartz movements.

So, what should you look for? The best thing to do is to take your watch to a qualified watchmaker and let them determine if your watch is genuine Rolex or not. Next, you can remove the watch band. Check between the lugs at the 12 position and see if it has an engraved "Registered Design" number. If you see no number, it is fake. Now check between the lugs at the 6 position. Here you should see a serial number of the case. If there is no number, it is fake.

If there is a glass crystal on the back of the case, so you can see the movement, your watch is fake. Also many times, you will see a "Rolex" that has the Rolex name engraved on the case back. These are also fakes.

On gold colored watches, look for signs of wear on the lug ends and on the case backs. Fake Rolex watches will often display area where the gold color has worn off, exposing the white colored base metal of the case below. Check the watch bands and look at the clasp. A genuine Rolex clasp is nicely engraved with the old original Rolex emblem. This appears on both gold and stainless clasps on watch bands.

Another thing to look for is the weight of the watch. Gold Rolex watches are very heavy as compared to the fakes which are very light for their apparent mass. This is because the specific gravity of gold (Au) is much greater than the specific gravity of a base metal. Stainless steel Rolex watches also have more weight to them because stainless is also much heavier than the base metal used in bogus watches.

We hope that this information helps. We understand that many people come into contact with a watch that may have been a gift or inherited from someone and they simply don't know if the watch they received is genuine or not. It is with this in mind that we hope this article helps you determine the true identity of your watch.

How to Identify a Fake Watch

Watches have become a very important symbol of status and welfare. There are people who are willing to buy replica watches so they could show their status, which in their case, though not always, can be quite doubtful.

When you buy a watch, and specifically a genuine watch, pay attention that you don't pay a lot of money for a fake timepiece. There are special on-line shops, which sell replica watches and they admit it. When buying a genuine watch at an unknown store, pay attention to the below listed steps, tips and warning.

Steps
1. Make yourself familiar with the collections of the watch brand, the timepiece of which you wish to buy.
2. Always inspect thoroughly the watch you wish to buy. Pay attention to the inscriptions and engravings on the face and on the case back of the watch. The original watch will never have a smeared inscription on the face or an unclear engraving.
3. Pay attention to the functions of the watch, i.e. how the watch itself works and how the chronograph works. Most Rolex watches have a sweep second hand and many fakes will have a tick style hand; however, some real Rolex watches have a tick style hand, so know your model. Some replica watches, which have a magnifying glass (called a cyclops), may have a weak level of magnification in comparison to the genuine timepiece.
4. Pay attention to the movement of the watch. If you intent to buy a mechanical timepiece, you should try to take a look under the case back. Fake watches often have a mechanical movement, but it is generally of lower quality than the genuine movement.

Tips
· Try to have the most recent catalogue always at hand, so you can compare the items in the store and the ones featured in the catalogue.
· Try to consult a person who deals with watches everyday or who is at least a watch enthusiast or professional collector.
· Use your common sense: a watch sold at a fraction of the store price is very likely to be fake.

Warnings
· The catalogues may not always contain all the watch models the company provides. There are cases when a specific watch is not included in the catalogue. · Beware that there are mechanical counterfeits, which have a sweeping seconds hand.
· Be careful not to misidentify an original watch. The watchmakers have produced thousands of watches and collections. There are older models which might be identified as being replicas.
· There were cases when even the watch brand has issued watches initially having a flaw, so don't haste the decision. The manufacturer will always call the watches back, when the flaw will be discovered.

Repeater Watches and Clock Watches

Repeaters are those watches with an attachment added that will sound the time at the wish of the user. The repeating mechanism is operated by either a slide, plunger or button in the case of the watch.

There are basically five types of repeating mechanisms, some more common than others:

Quarter Repeaters

The quarter repeater strikes the previous hour and quarter hour.

Half-Quarter Repeaters

These strike the hours, followed by the quarters also an additional single blow to denote the passing of an additional 7 1/2 minutes. These type of repeaters are uncommon.

Five-Minute Repeaters

Five-Minute repeaters fall into two types. One system is similar to the half-quarter repeater but follows the 1/4 "ting-tang" by a single higher - pitched strike for each 5 minute interval elapsed since the last quarter. The other system strikes the hours on a deep gong and follows this with a single higher note for each five minutes period after the hour, omitting a 1/4 striking.

Minute Repeaters

The most complicated of the repeater is similar to quarter - repeater with the addition of the minutes. The minute repeater strikes the last recorded hour, quarter and minutes. Clock WatchesThe clock watch is essentially a repeater with the features of a striking clock.
